CAREERS
Small team, real responsibility, and a lot of time spent away from a desk.
There is no graduate scheme and no long induction. People here are given a piece of the business early and are expected to own it, which suits some people very well and others not at all.
Much of the work happens away from an office. Buying season means being at collection points, checking what has been gathered, and settling with people in person. Quality work means opening bags rather than reading reports about them.
Pay is discussed openly at the first conversation rather than at the end of a process, because it wastes everybody's time to discover a gap after three meetings. We are a small company and we are honest about what that means: the salary is competitive rather than remarkable, and the compensation for that is scope, not equity.
What people who stay tend to have in common is a tolerance for repetitive care. Most of this job is doing the same unglamorous checks correctly on the four hundredth batch as on the first. If that sounds dull rather than satisfying, this is probably not the right place. The kind of work we mean.
Most of what we do rests on people believing what we told them last season. That only works if it was true.
A number nobody recorded is a number nobody has. Careful record keeping is not admin here, it is the product.
The job involves distance, dust and long days during the season. It is not office work with occasional travel.
A problem raised early is cheap. The same problem discovered at the port is not.
Not the diagram version. Who holds the risk at each step, where the margin sits, and why shipments really get delayed.
Agreeing prices with people who know their crop better than you do, and doing it in a way that leaves the relationship intact.
Certificates, declarations and the small mismatches that keep containers standing in ports. Unfashionable and genuinely valuable.
Send a note saying what you have done and what you want to do. A short honest message beats a long formatted one.
Usually with the founder. We will tell you plainly what the role involves, including the parts that are hard.
Where practical, come and see the work before either of us commits. It is the fairest test for both sides.
Terms, pay and what success looks like in the first six months, written down before you start.
There are no advertised vacancies at the moment. We still read every message, and we keep them, so it is worth writing if you think you would fit.
